We’re not in Kansas anymore…or Alabama for that matter. The opening lines of the title track sound like they came out of “The Wizard of Oz” as the Alabama Shakes stop out of the standard grayscale world of Southern Rock and into some kind of technicolor future! This sophomore album keeps its southern roots while taking a huge step forward with extreme experimentation that delivers colorful sound to your soul. Brittany’s vocals remain the powerhouse center…raw as Janis and refined as Adele…but the band has become just as powerful of a voice. Truly…the Alabama Shakes have found a yellow brick road and are leading us all to the futuristic emerald city of new wave southern rock-n-roll.
